Early interest in martial arts

Born and raised in Dandenong, Mark Blackwell was fascinated by Bruce Lee from childhood. He first explored Judo and Jujitsu before discovering Wing Chun at about 20 years of age.

Training in Dandenong

Mark began Wing Chun in 1990 at Grandmaster William Cheung’s Tower Road academy in Dandenong. The following year he began training under Joe Sayah, establishing the teaching relationship that would shape his development within Wing Chun Universe.

Developing as an instructor

Mark took part in martial arts tournaments and began full-time training with Joe in February 2007. The owner records that he has served as chief instructor of the Dandenong academy since 2009. Dandenong was Joe’s first Australian academy; Mark took responsibility for an established school rather than founding the original academy.

Teaching approach

Mark values economical movement, sound body mechanics and disciplined practice. His teaching aims to help students build confidence through patient work and to make technical ideas understandable so that others can continue learning for themselves.
