Early martial arts training

Born and raised in Melbourne, Robert Lay developed an early interest through martial arts films. He began Karate at about 13, explored several Kung Fu styles and later trained in kickboxing for approximately three years.

Choosing Wing Chun

Robert discovered Wing Chun through his brother and chose to study under Grandmaster Joe Sayah while continuing to work in the warehouse industry. Alongside his regular training, he undertook private tournament preparation with Joe.

According to the owner-supplied biography, Robert entered three kickboxing tournaments, recording two wins and one loss, and won one full-contact MMA bout. These results are presented as personal biographical history and have not been independently verified against official event records.

Instructor development

Robert completed an intensive twelve-month instructor-training programme under Joe and assisted with teaching as he developed. That experience combined technical study with the responsibility of helping other students understand and practise the material.

Leading Glen Waverley

Robert now leads the Glen Waverley academy and teaches in both Mandarin and English. The academy trains at 6B Aristoc Road, Mount Waverley VIC 3150; its established academy name remains Glen Waverley.
